Is Licorice Candy Good or Bad for You?

Whether we love it or not, but licorice candy is an important sweet for snacking. Licorice is a sweet root in origin and is usually used as a sweetener in drinks and candies and has a long-standing reputation of providing with a few medicinal benefits. Although, too much consumption of licorice candy affects our healthy negatively too.

It is recommended that moderate amounts of licorice is both tasty and healthy for the human body. If you people will end up eating 2 ounces or more of the licorice candy for a couple of weeks, it would cause a lot of health problems especially for people above the age of 40 years.

Licorice candy is an ages-old candy flavored and sweetened with licorice extract. Although, not all of the licorice candies contain a lot of licorice extract. For example, Hershey’s Twizzlers Twists Black Licorice, contains only 2% of the licorice extract. In a lot of candies now, the list of ingredients has licorice extract listed at the very last on the list following other ingredients like, carnauba wax, corn syrup, sugar, food starch, colorings and natural flavors.

Licorice candy is packed with calories too. A 40 grams serving of licorice candy contains about 1590 calories, 40 grams of carbohydrates and almost 20 grams of sugar. It has no fat, fiber, protein, or any notable vitamins or minerals.

Licorice extract is only found in the black licorice candies. Red ropes do not particularly contain the licorice extract nor do the chocolate versions and other flavors. Licorice extract has a long history as a traditional treatment in Eastern and Western medicine, used for heartburn, stomach ulcers, sore throat, cough and bronchitis. However, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, evidence doesn’t definitively support these medical uses for the root and especially does not support health claims for the candy.

According to a publication by the US Food and Drug Admin Department, too much licorice root and candy can be harmful to the health. The glycyrrhizin can cause a drop in the potassium level of the human body. The U.S. National Library of Medicine explains that potassium helps with nerve function, muscles to contraction, your heartbeat regularity and the movement of nutrients and waste in-and-out of cells.

The scientists found that glycyrrhizin acid, or glycyrrhizin, inhibits specific enzymes in the body and leads to reactions that elevate sodium levels and reduce potassium levels. They recommend that the FDA regulate licorice by placing a warning about upper limits of intake for safety.

The scientists go on to note that although licorice root may have some minor health benefits, daily use is not recommended. The adverse outcomes of eating the candy or root outweighs its possible positive effects.
